To give some background, this is my first Chromebook.I own a PC which I use for gaming and editing video files; and I've owned an '08 MacBook (recently died, which prompted this purchase) and a '12 MacBook Air (donated to Mom), both of which I primarily used to surf the web, check email, watch youtube, and play music and video files.
I needed to replace my MacBook so I researched my options, and based on my needs I narrowed my choices down to the Acer C720 and HP Chromebook11.I read through the limited reviews available at the time, and the overall theme was that the C720 offered greater performance over build/screen quality while the HP11 offered better build/screen quality over performance.I've always valued function over form so the C720 it was.
I'm glad to report that, IMO, the claims against the C720's screen - some of which made it sound like it was a total POS - are unfounded as I feel it's as good as my Macbook Air's screen.Of course, the build quality isn't the best, but it's not like it feels like a flimsy toy by any means. The keys and touchpad feel thinner, lighter, and of lesser quality than my MacBook but still adequate; and for $250 it's a solidly built machine that meets or exceeds all of my expectations.
At the time of purchase the available reviews had not covered whether this machine could meet my main criteria (detailed below in order of importance), and I am pleased to report that the C720 passes with flying colors on all counts!(Note, my '08 MacBook could not play 1080p video from my Sony Action Cam or GoPro (without the help of Plex Software), a limitation of the CPU/GPU.)
1. smooth playback of raw 1080p video files from my Sony ActionCam and GoPro 3 (1080p HDMI output to HDTV also works great!) 2. efficiently browse the web - no realistic limitation on open tabs/windows (thanks to the 4gb of ram) 3. compact size (the C720 feels just slightly heavier than my Macbook Air and a hair larger in all dimensions) 4. great battery life (based on a full charge and screen at 70% brightness, the battery indicator esimates 7 hours of use) 5. ability to continue using all of my external HD's (some laptops I've used before don't play nice)
Overall, I am super impressed with the C720, and IMO at $250 it's an outstanding bargain for a very capable machine.Assuming your primary use is similar to mine - surfing the web while on the couch / in bed, and playing music and videos - this laptop will surprisingly meet most if not all of your needs. The Intel Celeron Haswell chip, while dumbed-down, enables this Chromebook to match the performance of my MacBook Air for all my intents and purposes and even surpasses my older MacBook in video playback.I'm officially a Chromebook convert, and I don't see myself missing my MacBook anymore!I'll update this review as I develop further impressions but so far I am very happy with my decision to go with the C720.
11/15/13 UPDATE: I'm even more impressed with this machine after having spent another 3.5 weeks with it. Not only can I stream web content in 1080p to my TV via HDMI, but simultaneously on my C720 display I am able to stream 1080p content and browse in multiple tabs all at once with no discernible hit in performance. That's two 1080p streams to separate displays while still being able to smoothly browse the web. The C720 is a beast!
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase - and it's hard to beat the price. The battery lasts pretty much all day regardless of what I do with it, which is pretty great. And, once it's drained it doesn't take very long to charge back up, so it actually functions as a laptop (I've gotten used to "laptops" that basically need to be plugged in all the time because the battery dies so quickly). In terms of using the web and editing text I've been really happy. The keyboard feels normal - not cramped - and this little chromebook has been surprisingly fast booting up, loading sites, streaming video, etc. I've even done some website editing with this computer and haven't run into any performance issues.
Really, my only complaint is that chromebooks still aren't compatible with everything. It has been a pain trying to set up my printer because the driver install files are either .exe or .dmg and there are some things that just haven't come out for Chrome OS (e.g. I use Zotero for citations and Zotero can't be installed on a Chromebook).
So, as long as you know that there are certain things that won't work with Chrome OS, I'd highly recommend this computer. It's incredibly cheap, and it handles the important computing functions for pretty much everyone (web browsing, watching videos, and text editing) without any trouble.
I purchased this Chromebook for my 17 year old daughter as a backup to her main HP laptop because it's lighter to carry around school. She’s a dual enrollment student with a local college and this was perfect for her. I’ve done some web searches and video streaming and noticed that it’s really fast. It’s much faster than her regular laptop. It also boots up extremely fast as well. The OS is very clean looking. This was our first experience with using the Google Chrome OS. I’m overall very happy with this purchase and so is she!

This is perfect if you want to run linux on a chromebook. I'm currently typing this from this chromebook with Arch installed. I needed a lightweight 'coding' laptop and for doing every day tasks. No heavy gaming or music producing, etc. I have to say this little thing is more powerful than I thought. It handles the MATE desktop environment (not too heavy) with ease. I upgraded it with a 128GB M.2 SSD as well.
There are some things to get used to, however. One of which is the keyboard. There is no insert, delete, home, end, page down, page up keys which I like to use. So they have to be custom bound. The screen is probably the worst part. The viewing angles are not great. In my opinion, Acer should provide an upgradable part to remedy this. The resolution and brightness is fine but unless you have the screen tilted just right, the colors are off. It isn't enough for me to take off a star because it is mainly a product of being spoiled by great HD monitors.
If you're wondering whether or not to upgrade to the i3 or stick with the celeron, I'd stick with the celeron. Get the 4GB RAM and upgrade the SSD to run Linux. The i3 is only marginally better benchmark wise and to pay another $100 for it isn't worth it in my opinion.

I purchased this Chromebook 1 year and 7 months ago. I have used it daily ever since. In that year and a half, I used it to practice law, to teach law school, and in my spare time, to surf the net. I cannot imagine doing these tasks without it. Google Docs is perfect for writing court pleadings and briefs, collaborating with my paralegal, and electronically filing and serving the finished pdf documents. The Chromebook makes it easy to view and organize my files and the pdf pleadings and briefs that opposing counsels serve upon me. I appreciate the security of knowing that court documents are secure in the cloud and not sitting on the laptop's hard drive where they can be read or copied if the Chromebook is misplaced or stolen. I find Google Slides easier to use than Powerpoint, and my law students seem to appreciate the presentations that I make easily by plugging the Chromebook into the projector's/smartboard's HDMI port. I know there are those who cannot imagine giving up a Windows machine. I bought one on Black Friday, and it has been collecting dust ever since. Windows stands in the way of my productivity. Chrome OS makes me more productive because I spend my computer time focused on my needs instead of my computer's needs. As for reliability, this machine has not crashed a single time in the 19 months I have used it. Nothing ever broke or wore out, and nothing needed to be restarted or reinstalled, not even a single time after 19 months of daily use. In my opinion, if you are a professional such as a lawyer or a teacher, this is the right machine for you.

Performance: I've owned both a 2gb and 4gb C720p which both run extremely well. The 2gb accesses swap with 15+ tab and a video, although I rarely notice. The 4gb model never to my knowledge accesses swap, but otherwise I don't think the performance is dramatically different, so if your budget allows you to get the 4gb model go with that, but unless you are a techie, I doubt you will run into many problems with the cheaper device. Besides budget, I don't understand why all computers don't come with 4 gigabytes of RAM, it seems only logical.
Keyboard: As with all of the c720 Chromebooks, the keyboard is pleasant to use, although not my favorite - I would rate it 4/5 in the usage department. If you do a lot of typing then the lack of delete key is inconvenient, but alt+backspace works for delete and is easy to use with practice. Also, there is enough travel in the keys to provide good but not great feedback. I don't always know if a key is successfully pressed and as an anal-retentive, keyboard-staring typer, it delayed me until I learned to deal with it. One could consider it somewhat therapeutic to break my keyboard-staring habit. If it weren't for that it wouldn't necessarily be a problem. The keyboard doesn't seem as nice as the original Samsung Chromebook, but the Acer is superior in every other way.
Build: I'm in agreement with many people that it isn't a design beauty, but when buying a computer that is last on my check-list. Both the touch and non-touch models are very study, albeit the touch model is slightly heavier than other 11.6" machines (both machines also have a much longer (9 hour average) battery life than the other 11.6" devices I own). The touchscreen model is very responsive, has good picture and color quality. It does show fingerprints pretty badly, but I've used nearly everything to clean it and the screen has not scratched.
ChromeOS: It is the same on every device, so there is little point recapitulating what many people already say. Yes, there are some limitations, although as a student I was able to use it for everything up to putting the final touches on APA papers. I had a backup windows machine that served for that, so I used ChromeOS 90% of the time. My biggest issue is that google-docs errored out and required me to refresh while in the middle of work.
I like the device, very fast compaired to a regular laptop. Can do everything I need as a grad student, simple to use with a few things that are different (like no delete key, but a backspace key) Pros- Fast boot No worries about updating OS No delete button or end button or home nutton which are nice if you are writing 16gb memory is plenty if you have wifi (and really who doesn't) The integration works great with gdrive for storage, and i have not used any of the internal memory at all. no problems streaming videos from all sites cnn or DTV to watch shows, and amazon movies work great great battery life under heavy usage (I stream cnn video or other stuff while working on papers and I get about 10 hours) quick charging Cons- I bought a class 10 sd card for memory expansion not knowing if I would need it. It sticks out from the slot 3/4 of the way!!!! Horrible design, and will only cause problems. This is one item that NEEDS to be fixed
Overall if you want a good product that is quick to do work, in word documents light excel etc, plus web stuff and watch online shows tthis is awesome. I love the no mess and long wait for wingdows.

Exactly what I needed. Screen is a great size, not too small, not too clunky. It is perfect for working on projects (websites) when I'm away from my office. Batter lasts, screen is good, lightweight, I have zero complaints. It is ridiculous to buy a chromebook and expect it to be windows or iOS, It is a chromebook. With an app or two plus ability to work on my desktop remotely this is a serious tool for when you are travelling or meeting clients and don't want to lug a monster machine with you. Don't let the big box store salespeople tell you that it is slow and get you to upgrade to a laptop if you don't need one. I've worked remotely many times and there isn't an issue there.
Good but I needed a laptop with a Spanish keyboard layout and it was not advertised that this keyboard has a english US keyboard layout. Other than that this is a great little laptop. It feels light and very fast. The only minus is the screen. 720p is alright, but the pixels seem slightly hazy and grainy and the screen has a lot of glare depending on the angle from which you look at it.
2.0 out of 5 starsNot what was expected! Very disappointed!
